Da più di un secolo ogni primavera la carovana ciclistica del Giro d’Italia ripropone attraverso lo sport l’epopea del viaggio in Italia, il fascino di un paesaggio contemporaneo che contiene il destino dell’Occidente. Dall’inizio del nuovo millennio, la partenza avviene da un paese del nord, donando a questo evento una dimensione europea e facendo di questo evento sportivo un elemento per costruire la nuova identità europea. Nelle fotografie di De Lonti si inverte la gerarchia dell’evento: i campioni del ciclismo sono come il flusso indistinto di un fiume che scorre, immobili protagonisti sono gli spettatori, le architetture antiche e moderne e gli straordinari scenari alpini. Nella leggerezza di un nuovo sguardo, le immagini di De Lonti dialogano con le poesie del grande sceneggiatore Tonino Guerra e dello scrittore francese Patrice Cotencin.

For over a century every spring brings round the cycle race known as the Giro d’Italia, which revives through sport the epic of the Tour of Italy, the fascination of a contemporary landscape that contains the destiny of the West. Since the beginning of the new millennium, the Giro has always started from a country in the north of Europe, so giving this event a European dimension and contributing to the creation of a new European identity. De Lonti’s photographs invert the hierarchy of the event: the champion cyclists are like the indistinct mass of a river in spate, the unmoving protagonists are the spectators, the ancient architecture and the extraordinary mountain scenery. With the lightness of a new gaze, the images by De Lonti dialogue with the poems by the great screenwriter Tonino Guerra and the French writer Patrice Cotencin.
