La forma di Berlino nell’epoca moderna ha avuto come momento originale e decisivo il viaggio in Sicilia di K.F. Schinkel e la successiva edificazione monumentale, perseguita in consapevole continuità con il fondamento greco-romano dell’architettura e della civiltà occidentale. Giovanni Chiaramonte riscopre e sviluppa nelle proprie immagini il destino implicito in questo fondamento che è chiave di volta della storia tedesca ed europea del secolo scorso. La sua opera berlinese, iniziata nel 1984, non si è mai interrotta ed è continuata nel nuovo millennio rappresentando la complessa figura contemporanea della nuova capitale in costruzione sopra i vuoti, i frammenti, le contraddittorie e straordinarie sopravvivenze del passato, simbolo della nuova Europa tesa alla ricerca di una nuova unità e di una nuova immagine.

The shape of Berlin in modern times had its original and critical moment with the journey of K.F. Schinkel in Sicily and with the following monumental building, pursued with a conscious continuity with the greek-roman foundation of architecture and of western civilisation. Giovanni Chiaramonte rediscovers and develops within his images the destiny implicit in this foundation that is the keystone of German and European history of the last century. His Berlin work, started in 1984, has never interrupted and has continued in the new millennium representing the complex contemporary figure of the new capital which was being built over the voids, the fragments, the contradictory and extraordinary survivals from the past, symbol of the new Europe, aimed at the research of a new unity and a new image.
