Dai manoscritti altomedievali alla grande scultura romanica e gotica che ha decorato i portali delle grandi cattedrali europee, sino ai maestri del Rinascimento, con un’ampia parte dedicata all’ambiente di cultura bizantina in Serbia, Macedonia, Grecia, Bulgaria, l’opera segue il formarsi e lo svilupparsi dell’iconografia del Giudizio sino al grande spartiacque rappresentato dall’affresco michelangiolesco della Sistina. Al testo generale si affiancano una serie di finestre sui monumenti più significativi, affidate ai maggiori specialisti europei, corredate da un’ampia documentazione fotografica.

From early medieval manuscripts to the great Romanesque and Gothic sculpture decorating the portals of Europe’s magnificent cathedrals, through the work of the Renaissance masters, with an extensive part devoted to the world of Byzantine culture in Serbia, Macedonia, Greece, and Bulgaria, this work traces the formation and development of the iconography of the Last Judgment up to the major watershed represented by Michelangelo’s fresco in the Sistine Chapel. The main text is accompanied by windows onto the most significant monuments, prepared by the leading European specialists in the subject and supported by ample photographic documentation.
