Le tavole dei Comandamenti davanti a cui giocano le bambine di una scuola, un aquilone che si alza nel cielo di un parco nella festa della Repubblica, il ceppo di un albero sul luogo della battaglia combattuta nel corso della guerra del 1967, la tomba di Davide, il Muro del Pianto, il cenacolo in cui Gesù, gli apostoli e Maria hanno celebrato la Pasqua, la cripta del Santo Sepolcro, la soglia della Moschea dove i musulmani si dirigono verso la preghiera del venerdì sono alcune delle immagini che testimoniano del pellegrinaggio di Giovanni Chiaramonte a Gerusalemme.
Egli parte dalla constatazione dell’eliminazione di Gerusalemme dalla figura della città occidentale (Parigi, Londra, Washington) e i luoghi da lui rappresentati testimoniano della grandezza e della luce dei gesti e delle costruzioni degli uomini che là hanno vissuto e vivono.

A group of children who are playing in front of the tablets of the 10 Commandments; a kite which rises skyward in a park on Independence Day; the stump of a tree at the site where a battle of the war of 1967 was fought; the tomb of David; the Wailing Wall; the upper room in which Jesus, the Apostles and Mary celebrated the Passover; the crypt of the Holy Sepulchre; and the threshold of the mosque toward which Muslims turn to direct their Friday prayers: these are among the images that witness to Giovanni Chiaramonte’s pilgrimage in Jerusalem.
His standing point is the discovery that Jerusalem has been eradicated from the shape of western cities (such as Paris, London, or Washington). The places he photographs portray the grandeur and light of the buildings and gestures of the men who live and have lived in Jerusalem.
