Nessun personaggio della storia antica ha risvegliato tante fantasie mitiche come Alessandro Magno. L’eco della sua vicenda ha attraversato la civiltà classica, quella ebraica, quella cristiana, quella islamica. In particolare il medioevo occidentale vide un fiorire di codici le cui illustrazioni miniate raccontano la “Ystoire du Bon Roi Alexandre”. Nelle 100 vignette del Codice di Berlino trova spazio tutto l’universo visivo dell’uomo medioevale. Se protagonista assoluto resta il carattere guerriero del re, con frequenti scene di battaglia, non mancano i riferimenti al combattimento contro animali fantastici (serpenti, leoni, draghi…), a simboleggiare l’eterna lotta dell’uomo contro l’ignoto, e la dimensione sentimentale propria di ogni cavaliere che si rispetti, spesso alle prese con figure femminili.
Il volume riporta ampi stralci del testo uniti a descrizioni delle singole miniature, che accompagnano il lettore lungo l’avventurosa biografia di Alessandro.

No figure in ancient history gave rise to such mythical fantasies as Alexander the Great. The echo of his achievements traversed classical, Jewish, Christian, and Islamic civilization. The medieval West, in particular, saw a flowering of illuminated codices that recounted the “Ystoire du Bon Roi Alexandre”. The whole visual universe of mediaeval man is embodied in the 100 illuminations of the Berlin codex. Though it is dominated by the warlike figure of the king, with numerous battle pieces, there are also scenes of combat with fabulous creatures (serpents, lions, dragons…) symbolizing man’s eternal struggle with the unknown, as well as the romantic adventures expected of every self-respecting knight, who is frequently entangled with female figures.
The volume contains generous selections from the text with descriptions of the individual miniatures that accompany the reader through Alexander’s adventurous biography.
